Michael was invited by the Boston Globe to submit a design proposal for a COVID memorial as part of the paper’s series of articles marking the pandemic as the US death toll reached one million. The design, Coronaflower, a 15-foot sunflower, is a symbol for hope. The flower is on the ground, alluding to how the virus knocked us down but our essence remains. The missing petal speaks to our losses. The back allows for plaques, photos, or other commemorations.
